At The End Of The Day

It’s been raining here in the desert today, a beautiful day.  Kind of romantic even.  It’s the end of Valentine’s Day.  It’s quiet now.

I had only one wedding to perform today.  It was a nice one, older retired couple.  Those are sometimes the best weddings to be part of.  With older couples, they already know what marriage is about.  They know relationships are work.  And they often have more light in their eyes than the young twenty-something fresh-faced kids I perform marriage ceremonies for.

When we’re young, we have all these ideas about how we think love and marriage should be.  When we’re older, we usually have a much better idea.  Either way, the commitment is what matters.  Not just on one special day of the year.  But every day.

So tonight, while my husband is at work, I am sitting back and reflecting on how our lives changed.  Ten years ago we made the decision to skip Valentine’s Day and made bigger plans instead.  I didn’t regret it then, and I don’t regret it now.

Rather, I’m grateful.  I’m grateful that after so many years we are still choosing to make our marriage work.  We are choosing to learn together, heal together and grow together.  I’m grateful that we don’t need one special day.  And I’m grateful that at the end of the day, any day, all we truly need, is each other.

Blessed Be.
