The Most Wonderful Gift

The last couple of days I’ve been feeling very retrospective, as I always am at this time of year.  I’m certain most of us go through the same thing.  Another year older, and what does it mean?  Also, because the holiday season is here, the new year is coming, and so has the greed.

It didn’t use to be this way.

The holidays are supposed to be a time of love and joy, peace and giving.  Yet, here we are in a world of greed, pushed forward by the machine of war, and we are on the edge of a nuclear disaster (both literally and figuratively speaking).  How did we get to this point?

I want you to consider for just a moment how life would be different if  we didn’t celebrate birthdays, or holidays.  What would life, and society be like if we were never asked the question “What do want for your birthday? What do you want for Christmas?”

We say that “the love of money is the root of all evil”.  But it’s not just money.  We are taught from birth to want, to “need”, to demand ….  more.  And it’s not just in the advertisements we see.  It starts at home, with the question, “What do you want for…”  If we did not ask that question of our children, and teach our children to have expectations, I believe that we would, over time, greatly lessen the greed factor in society as a whole.

We also would lessen the stress our ourselves as adults.  If we are not teaching the children expectation, then as adults, we also don’t have the stress of feeling like we have to go purchase something nice for someone just because it happens to be a certain day of the year.  Without expectation, we do something for someone we love simply because we choose to.

And that becomes the most wonderful gift of all.  Love.
